Tiger Woods wins WGC-Cadillac as Rory McIlroy finds form at last

The former world No1 Tiger Woods picked up his biggest victory since 2009 by winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami just a month ahead of the Masters.

Woods finished on 19 under par after a final-round 71 to claim his 76thPGA Tour victory and his 17th World Golf Championship title. He finished two shots clear of Steve Stricker while Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Sergio García ended on 14 under.

The final round saw a return to form for the world No1, Rory McIlroy, who finished eighth after a 65, but it is Woods who is hitting his stride on a march to the Masters.

The American had full control of his game on Sunday and never let anyone get closer than three shots until he had secured the title.

For the first time in five years, Woods has two wins before the Masters and is sure to be the favourite at Augusta next month.

It was one year ago at Doral that Woods withdrew after 11 holes in the final round because of tightness in his left achilles tendon, creating uncertainty about his health and whether he could ever get his game back, but fortunately it was a false alarm.

Woods has won five times in the last year, more than anyone in the world, and he can return to No1 with a win at Bay Hill in two weeks.

He said: "I'm just trying to get better. It's very simple. I feel like my game's becoming more efficient, and it's more consistent day in and day out, and I'm very pleased with the progress I've made.

"The greens got really quick out there today. And if you left the ball in the correct spot though, you could be pretty aggressive and you could shoot a good number."

McIlroy flew up the leaderboard after an eagle on the 1st and birdies at the 5th, 10th, 11th, 16th and 17th.

"I'm quite happy with where my game is at compared to where it was at the start of the week," McIlroy told Sky Sports 2. "There is quite a bit to go but scores like today and shots like that over the last three days definitely give me confidence."

McIlroy will make just one more start before the Masters in April. Woods will go into that first major of the year full of confidence after he won this event in Miami for a seventh time.
